Electronic Visas for Foreigners

Legal Digest News
Starting from August 1st, 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation has launched a service for issuing unified electronic visas for foreign citizens.

Using this service, foreign citizens arriving in Russia for tourism, business, scientific, cultural, sporting, or other purposes can apply for unified electronic visa in a simplified manner.

To apply for a visa, it is necessary to register on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation's website and fill out the corresponding application. The application must be submitted no earlier than 40 days and no later than 4 days before the planned date of entry into Russia.

It is necessary to give consent to the automated processing, transmission, and storage of the data provided in the application. Additionally, a consulate fee is charged for issuing a visa (excluding children under 6 years old).

When applying, you may need:

  • PDF viewing and printing software (preferably Adobe Acrobat Reader);
  • a valid national passport that will be presented at the crossing point of the state border of the Russian Federation;
  • a digital photograph of the passport data page in JPEG format;
  • a digital photograph of the face in JPEG format that meets the requirements outlined in the Service Guide;
  • a bank card for paying the consular fee.

The processing time for the application is 4 business days. If there are no comments on the application, it is assigned a status "Accepted for processing". If the application contains inaccurate information, the status is changed to "Returned for editing" and the applicant supplements the document and resubmits it through the service. In case of a positive decision, the status is changed to "Processing completed" and the applicant is notified of the visa issuance. This notification should be presented at the checkpoint when crossing the state border of the Russian Federation.

Unified electronic visa is a single-entry visa that is valid for no more than 16 days from the date of entry. The visa must be used within 60 days from the date of issue. Please note that unified electronic visa can only be obtained by foreign citizens who are included in the list of countries approved by the Government of the Russian Federation. This list can be found in a brief overview on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation before submitting an application.

In addition, unified electronic visa is only valid for entry at certain border crossings approved by the Government of the Russian Federation.
