Tax laws change so often that keeping track of every update has become nearly impossible. And it's not just about paperwork. A mistake in calculations, an incorrectly filed tax return, or a misinterpreted tax benefit can lead to serious financial losses, fines, and unwanted attention from the tax authorities.
This issue has become particularly relevant following recent high-level announcements.

What's Changing with VAT for Simplified Tax System Users
In early June, at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the President of Russia proposed revising the planned reduction of the revenue threshold at which companies on the simplified taxation system are required to pay VAT.
Previously, the threshold was set to decrease gradually: from the current 20 million rubles to 15 million next year, and then to 10 million. Now, the proposal is to freeze the threshold at its current level. The Government and parliament have been instructed to draft the necessary amendments without delay.
At first glance, this seems like good news for businesses. But in reality, it's not a reason to let your guard down.
First, the threshold hasn't been abolished or raised — it may simply stop decreasing in the future. Second, the obligation to pay VAT when revenue exceeds the established limit remains in full force. This means that accurate calculations and impeccable record-keeping are still critically important.

Why a Records Review Is Not a Luxury, But a Necessity
Mistakes are costly. Even a small error in a tax return can trigger a desk audit. And if the tax authorities discover systemic violations, the total amount of additional taxes, penalties, and fines can be overwhelming.
Legislation changes faster than we can study it. New rules, clarifications, and official interpretations are released almost weekly. Keeping all of this in mind and applying it correctly is a task that requires dedicated professionals.
Automated control systems cross-check tax returns against hundreds of criteria. Any inconsistency immediately draws attention. The chance that an error will go unnoticed is practically zero.
External factors also matter. Since last year, new restrictions have been in place for procurement of accounting and auditing services by companies involved in government contracts. This means choosing a reliable accounting partner is no longer just about convenience — it's a legal requirement.
